According to OSHA, 6,000 people die from workplace injuries every year, and nearly 12 injuries occur in a workplace every minute. In recognition of these facts, Smith-Midland Corporation’s safety committee meets bi-monthly to address safety interactions to recognize and reinforce safer behaviors. The committee identifies issues and decides on actions necessary to alleviate them. The actions are then followed through with before the next meeting.

The committee has implemented a First Responder Program. Every department identifies one or two first responder(s), who attended CPR and First Aid classes to assist with small emergencies, or until emergency services arrive. First Responder kits and defibrillators have been placed throughout the facilities.

Other initiatives include collaborating with the local Fire Department to create an evacuation plan. Programs to enforce safety procedures have been put in place, such as creating zones where hard hats and other safety equipment is a requirement. Other programs have been created to encourage healthy lifestyles, which improve productivity. The company hosts health fairs, provides free flu shots, as well as providing healthy lifestyle tips through the company newsletter.
